The estate of playwright Edward Albee made a controversial decision to withhold rights to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? when a black actor was cast in a role originally intended for a Caucasian actor.  This Playbill piece sheds light on the reasoning: Albee didn’t like directors imposing meaning where none was intended.
